In response to the recent earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the destructive consequences that have occurred due to this natural disaster, Fourfoursixsix have been invited to propose a commercial response for 32 Cathedral Square.

Occupying a prominent position on the north-eastern side of Cathedral Square, the building will set a development precedent – faithfully maintaining the cultural significance of the previous heritage structures, while generating a new and unique sense of identity for this historically vibrant public space.

Focused around a contemporary response to the development values of the original Press Building, the design utilises the use of innovative materials and building systems, creatively maximises usable space for the benefit of developer and tenant, and introduces an inspirational façade that effectively communicates to and reacts with the surrounding environment.

Rotating three degrees per eight metre bay, the building form rises out of the ground as it moves from north to south. Creating a horizontally vertiginous effect, the proposal acts to draw people down Press Lane and utilise the renewed public spaces at each end.

The canopied entrance at the south end of Press Lane steps back in respectful acknowledgement of the Cathedral and tilts up to welcome people into the building, where provision has been made for retail space at ground level and commercial space throughout the remaining four floors.
