The Baltic’s wealth and population have dispersed since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The world’s major cities have become global centres for this new breed of internationally affluent people; London being at the forefront of this transition. The dispersion of Baltic wealth requests a diffusion of Baltic culture. By taking a modern representation of what is considered an age old English tradition; the gentlemen’s club, the proposal aims to accommodate the requirements of these affluent clients.
Baltic social traditions promote relaxation and purity as essential aspects of everyday life. Saunas are fundamental within Eastern Europe, and relate specifically to relaxation and detoxification. Vodka is an integral part of the eastern social fabric. It is well known to be one of the purest alcohol types, and during moderate consumption becomes an intrinsic part of sauna participation, as it provides essential energy (glucose) replacement, causes a mild euphoria and removes inhibitions. The proposal will concentrate on these aspects to consolidate a nexus of Baltic tradition within a central London environment. The characteristics of relaxation and purity are also paramount within London clubs, in order to capitalise on the exclusivity and luxury of space in intensely urban environments.
Since 1693, Gentlemen’s clubs have all had the same purpose; to provide a meeting place for like minded people. Subsequently each has its own flavour. They offer respite from the everyday turmoil’s of the city, providing a safe house for private relaxation. The proposal aims to become a home from home for Baltic passport bearers in London (for a fee). They will be given the opportunity to escape the western world, and reconnect with these intrinsically important aspects of Baltic life.
