Set amongst a steep and challenging jungle location on the east coast of Koh Samui, Thailand, the Natural Wing Spa masterplan and unit design chose to maximise green space and conserve the natural beauty of the surrounding context where possible. Subsequently, we chose to develop six compact, efficient units with minimal footprints, to be located equidistant from one another on the site.

By creating a clear delineation between public and private, and working with, not against, the steep terrain of the jungle context, the building massing was developed to provide open plan living areas and external terracing at ground level, with the more private bedrooms, circulation and utility spaces above.

Working within quite a restrained budget, each unit utilises a simple and efficient concrete structure. Local, sustainable timber then surrounds this inner shell to display a clean and modern building façade. Incorporated within this is a user-defined brise soleil system, integrated within the upper level balustrade.
